In ye olden times a fuller figure was desirable by many women as it signified a higher societal status, but these days it seems most women would happily trade all the firemen/women in the world for a set of visible abs. Many men can achieve visible abs purely by maintaining a very low body fat percentage, regardless of the amount of muscle they may or may not have. Unfortunately for women, they naturally have less muscle and just being skinny is not enough for the washboard look. In order for women to achieve and proudly display a rippling stomach, they need to develop the muscles in that area. Listed below are the best ab exercises (in my humble opinion) for women to build these muscles and sculpt the perfect bikini body.
Please keep in mind that in the context of this post “the best” really means “the best in my opinion” but that would look stupid to write everywhere so I have just written “the best”.

The photo for ab workout number 1 scares me! I didn’t know,it was possible for women to get such extreme ab definition. When I watched the workout video though, I saw why it works – it’s gruelling to say the least. The problem with abs is that even if your muscles are very strong, if you have even a bit of fat on your belly, it’ll hide the muscles! I’m working on reducing my body fat currently, hope so see some abs one day.
That’s right SC, visible abs are a combination of muscle and low body fat. It’s harder for women to achieve than men because they naturally have less muscle and higher body fat percentage but as you saw in the videos it’s definitely possible. Good luck!
hi Brad
your post comes at the right time as I saw it just as I was about to start exercising! Love the videos, the last one is the one I will be trying at the gym. But As I also have a BOSU ball I can start now at home. Will be working on my obliques! I love ab exercises and have tried soooo many of them, including most of the ones in the videos. But sometimes I forget, so it is good to have them all in one spot!
good one Emily, the BOSU ball is a great tool for working out. It’s great to hear you love ab exercises, I hope you keep enjoying your journey to abtown!
Wow.. I never knew a woman could have such amazing ab definition! So, the abs in the bottom photo, would that require serious dedication on a daily basis to get that definition and maintain it? Are these results definitely not achievable from home without gym equipment? Could any definition be achieved by just working out at home? Sammi
Hi Sammi, yes for a woman to achieve and maintain abs like that requires hard work and dedication. I’m not going to say it’s not possible to achieve those type of results by working out at home but it’s definitely easier if you make use of gym equipment. But when you combine a good diet and the right exercises anything is possible!
You certainly have laid out the true facts of what it takes to get tight and washboard abs for women, but it definitely takes a hell of a lot of work, and I would have to say our genetic makeup has a lot to do with it just as being short or tall, some females doing the exact same workouts will have different affects due to genetics. Nice info, now I just have to get out of my chair and start following them!
Right you are Angela, and if you need extra motivation then you should try a pre workout!
Hello, thanks for providing these exercises. It is great when somebody who wants to have great figure, can perform them at home. These models look great. I wonder how long it would take for real person to have this type of body?
Looking to these videos, people can have examples before their eyes, how to achieve better results without gym.

Hey there
Great article by the way, I would like to say I found the way you wrote very easy to understand, which for me is uncommon so good one for that. thanks.
Why are they the best abs work out for women ? dose it not work with men aswell?
I found some great tips and useful pointer to take away with me from this article, for that reason I will save this site in my browser and will return for some more juicy info at a later date.
thank you.
~Jack
Hi Jack, Thanks for your comments, I’m glad you found it useful. Men can do these exercises too but women are built differently – I’m not an exercise physiologist but I do know that men can use extra resistance when working their abs rather than pure body weight exercises like these.
Hi Brad,
This article is really great, specially for us women. Yes, we all like to look good and doind these exercises at home is fantastic. No more excuse of time, it is now resolved. Thank you for sharing, people like you are helping many. I will also recommend it to some of my friends.
Thanks Charlotte – happy training!
There are some great exercises on this website. I really like how you organized and created this website. I think you did a very good job.
You included a lot of visual representations which I think would really help someone who has little experience exercising.
Now I just need to get my girlfriend to take a look at your website lol
Thanks Jaime. Good luck with your girlfriend!
I like trying out different workouts and I am happy to have come across you page on ab exercises. I like the oblique ones and the first one that we can do everyday. I can easily do them both. I read that doing plank can also help with strengthening ab muscles. What are your thoughts on this? Thanks for sharing these!
Hi, yes I think the plank can be great for strengthening your core abdominal muscles. Happy planking!
Hey Brad.
I have a few questions. First, I have never understood if the essence of abs. Is it all about burning fat or training abdominal muscles to reveal them?
Second, I just read about something called the visceral fat.
Do the exercise you have listed somehow target this fat that’s supposed to be in the deepest part of your stomach?
Thank you in advance,
Jay
Hi Jay,
To get visible abs you need to have a relatively low body fat percentage, and also have some muscles there to show. You will see abs regardless of muslce tone with a super low body fat %, but it is healthier and more sustainable to have higher body fat (10-15%) and work on the muscles.
Unfortunately there is no exercise to target weight loss in a specific area – as people lose body fat is comes off in different areas at different rates and this is all down to genetics!
Happy training!
Brad.
